Just sent this letter to the Prime Minister ... and I usually vote conservative.... and Im not a political person but this is just plain wrong. Thought Id post it and see if more people will speak up and send their thoughts to him, too. His email is [email protected], if you want to... The Right Honourable Stephen Harper, PC, MP Prime Minister of Canada Office of the Prime Minister 80 Wellington Street Ottawa, ON K1A 0A2 Mr. Prime Minister: I write today to encourage you to change your position on sending Canadian military personnel to the Middle East where they will, effectively, participate as active combatants on one side of a war between government and non-government forces. Sir, this is not the way I, nor many people in my community, would choose to act in bringing an end to the conflict. It is not the “Canadian Way.” Canada has, for many decades, been a leader in the world community preserving peace. Our troops have courageously and proudly deployed in harm’s way on many occasions as peacekeepers; protecting the innocent, bringing humanitarian relief, and providing a beacon of hope in places of the world where war is common, human rights are but a dream, education is non-existent, and food and water is in short supply. Sending advanced warplanes to the Middle East to bomb ground targets where there is a high probability that innocents will be killed or maimed and bemoaned as collateral damage is not something Canadian politicians should support. Millions of dollars will be wasted dropping advanced armaments and supporting the maintenance of our fighter aircraft and personnel. Instead, use that money to build bridges of peace by providing humanitarian assistance. Your decision to commit our forces to a war on the far side of our planet is not the Canadian Way. It will diminish Canada’s reputation in the world. It will cause those who we now attack to bring their war to Canadian soil and justify it because our troops are now combatants. Reserve our military for use in defending our country or for strictly humanitarian missions. Keep our borders strong. Bring our aircraft and personnel home. Be the leader that Canada needs. Be a leader the world needs. Respectfully, Phil Porter
