Just sharing info... 6-28-14 ~ Whatta Week in DecorahLand! Written by Sherri Elliott and used with her permission. By now we all are breathing a little easier knowing that our DDDs are accounted for and each teaching us new lessons on their fledge. It truly has been a new year for all of us watching, especially those of us who are drawing on fledge behaviors we witnessed in 2011 and 2012, and well, while a lot of their activities went sideways after they took their flights of faith, the most important thing is that we know where they are; they are being closely observed; being fed either by their parents, hunting on their own, and being supplemented with offerings of fish and quail from Bob which will make them even stronger. And one of our eaglets had surgery today to repair its broken wing. Please take a few minutes and look at some of the past threads of this week. Not only will you get caught up on eeevery detail, but youll also see how dddeeeply adddored each of our DDDs are. D18, also known as Eaglet Without Transmitter (EWOT), has been observed flying strong even if only a few short flights have been observed. Hes also gotten the nickname Mulch Pile Baby, but Id prefer to think of him as King of Mulch Mountain, especially after seeing a particularly fierce puffball image of him and open beak screeech defending his, umm, turf ... from a bird fly-by. D19, also known as Eaglet With Transmitter (EWT) has flown to about a mile past the hatchery where she was released. Whether shes made short flights from tree to tree to get there, or had her sights set all along on the security of the bluffs and tree canopy, shes doing well, and thanks to her new transmitter, Bob is able to listen for her cell phone calls and trek the thick underbrush to check on her. She surprised him today noting that she was way up above his location surveying the sights … exactly what a young Princess of the Tree Canopy should be doing. D20, also known as SOAR baby, is in the wonderful care of that raptor rehab facility who send us daily progress reports on its condition. Today a second x-ray today reaffirmed he was strong, surgery commenced, and reports are that while it was complicated, he is doing well, and well see how he rebounds over the next hours and days. While our SOAR baby might be SORE for a while, we already know our little daredevil is fierce and will be up to whatever rehab is lined up. I already have a mental picture of him acing future Physical Theeerapy sessions. Id like us all to take a Flight of Faith tonight and fledge from the NWZ to EEEuphoria, and only our EEEs know how to Peter Pan that flight for us! Please enjoy this bit of film from June 16th during a rainstorm, and watch closely. But first, load up your background music play list with Singing in the Rain, and Splish Splash … what we see is the first time I can ever remember witnessing this in either nest in 4 years of watching. Oh sure, the DDDs are thoroughly enjoying the downpour and wing whacking and flap hopping like crazy, but watch each of them as they bathe for us! Youll see each of them do the Decorah Dip, tipping over on one side to wash up, and then dipping the other side. Theres also some tushie tailfeather washing, and a particularly funny tweaking moment that is much more apropos than a certain young singer performed at an awards show. Such a wonderful moment in time, and how many of us missed it because we were focused on the wing flapping and not the bathing. These precious 20 minutes show there are many instincts our DDDs possess that we often dont get to observe … this is not imprinted behavior from their parents, but they could be imprinting each other on the fine art of bathing! Ok … cue Bobby Darin now for some Splish Splashin fun! Sweet Eaglet Dreams! Special thanks to our video makers: eaglewhisperer18 for the first version; and to dragonlainey for digging through their archives to prepare a 20 minute version. eaglewhisperer18 6-16-14: Decorah Eaglets Winging In The Rain https://youtube/watch?v=cL3D_RjEgWk dragonlainey 6-16-14: Storm Behavior https://youtube/watch?v=KCFwr-ynotA&feature=youtu.be
