Just sharing some interesting feedback. I questioned the company about the DNA results of my dog (telling us he is a 50/50 cross of a full blooded AmStaff and full blooded German Shepherd Dog). The AmStaff is easy to spot, but not so much the GSD. They asked me to send some pictures, so I did. This is what they had to say: The boring part: They have a high degree of confidence in their assessment as the two samples that I sent in were both of high quality and were not different (meaning there was lots of DNA to test on each sample and that both swabs and were exactly the same - so contamination from our other GSD type dog is unlikely). Heres the interesting part. They said that AmStaff genetics (bent ears, wide eyes, short fur) are always dominant to most other breed characteristics, including the GSDs (large pointy ears, medium length fur, saddle, sloped hind quarters) and that cross breeds between these two types of dogs almost always yield a strongly AmStaff appearance. GSD (and other) breed features can only be expressed when both parents carry the recessive feature. The only expression of GSD that are visible in Murphy are the general outline shape and relatively larger size of his ears (but bent ears are dominant), the overall length of his legs (longer legs are dominant), the length of his muzzle, and his muted blocky skull, which are the two dissimilar genetic features blending. Also, black (with white or not) is the most common color of both cross and mixed breed dogs. So, basically, if there is 50% pit in the mix, the pit shows. If something else shows clearly, it is not a 50/50 cross, but a mix of breeds over more than one generation. Interesting?
