Just so you all know--- Sheriff Mark Gorbett has put Deputy Dewayne Janes on PAID LEAVE, AFTER RECOMMENDING HE BE FIRED. !! Gorbett raised his voice and told me the day he gave me the investigative documents ( 4 months after Cary died) that, the only thing Janes did wrong was to jump in and help out. Now, it seems he has changed his mind about that. Remember Janes was suspended for only 5 days while the other deputies were suspended for 10. huh? FROM THE REPUBLIC: Bartholomew County Sheriff Mark Gorbett is taking steps toward firing a 22-year department veteran who is perhaps best known as a key figure in the controversial Cary Owsley case. Gorbett said he will ask the Sheriffs Merit Board to terminate the employment of Deputy E. DeWayne Janes, Sr., because the deputy investigated an Aug. 31 non-emergency call involving his ex-wife, Lisa Owsley, who is Cary Owsleys widow. Janes had been counseled and cautioned on numerous occasions to refrain from any investigations involving family members, Gorbett said. Janes, who is accused by Gorbett of violating three general orders and nine Merit Board rules and regulations, has been on paid administrative leave from the sheriffs department since Sept. 3, according to the sheriff.
