Just some fleeting thoughts... Open to counter-argument... Recently, I heard many Vietnamese youngsters (some are my friends, some are not) complain about the governance of our country. They complain a lot about policies, about corruption, about poverty, about education, about moral issues and about everything that they are dissatisfied with. Most of them, interestingly, send me some online articles as a proof of what they say. This recalls me a little bit about a news commentary that I read a few months ago. After the incident in which hundreds of people loot beers in Dong Nai, people all over the country enthusiastically discussed about moral issues of the contemporary society, criticized the looters for their embarrassing behaviors and blamed the incapability of our education system. But several days later, when a truck of Dutch Lady company was also overturned in Quang Ninh, people came to help the driver collect milk bottles. The story was published in a newspaper the next morning. No one cared. So, what is the problem here? The problem is that people tend to be attracted by shocking news rather than the good and trivial ones. Journalists are trained carefully enough to be aware of this. As a result, most of what we see on the internet today are bad news. It is, however, so funny that many youngsters nowadays start to assume that they have become very knowledgeable just by sitting next to their computers, reading newspapers and blaming the country. Certainly, I do not deny that there are still many difficult problems in Vietnam nor do I deny that there are many things our government need to change. But dont merely look at the negative sides, and also, dont just complain. Cambodia struggle to deal with woman kidnapping and trafficking. India has problems with suburban slums and religious conflicts. Hong Kong is characterized by income inequality. Each country has its own issues, which are all worth complaining about. But what wise citizens of a country will do is not to complain, but to act, to do something, not necessarily something big. You complain about poverty? Donate a small sum to a NGO instead. You complain about the corruption among traffic policemen? Speak up, dont just bribe them. You complain about the moral degradation within youngsters? Try to educate your children well. Of course, you can complain; its your basic right, but dont make it the only thing that you do. When you blame all the problems on the world, you tend to do nothing, and you tend to change nothing. Unfortunately, the world is never better that way.
