Just some information I wanted to share..............I have a friend who does craft items with antlers in them. Maybe a centerpiece with a candle, antler, greenery, pine cones, etc. I see pictures on here of antler baskets, so it got my curiosity stirred. I called locally to see if it was legal to buy or sell deer antlers and received several different answers, so, I called directly to the state wildlife agency and was given a name and number of the person who could answer that question for me. I just received a return call from him. In the state of North Carolina, it was historically illegal to sell any animal part in any way until recently. The law is now that you can have the trophy antler mounted and sold, with or without the head. After hearing my explanation of what her crafts were and how I would use an antler in a basket, he said that it would fall under the new law if you are going to use a trophy (and he explained that to be a whole antler, not cut up or pieces) antler. But, in order to sell, a Trophy Sale Permit is required. A permit is needed for each basket (or item) containing the antler. He said to send an email to him with a name, address and picture of the basket and they will transfer that information over to the permit and email the permit back to me. There is no cost for the permits and they are good until the basket is sold. At that time, he said I would sign the permit and give it to the purchaser. If anyone would like his info, it is: Daron Barnes and his email address [email protected]. I dont want any of my fellow weavers to get caught and get in trouble. Again, this is only for NORTH CAROLINA, but I urge you to contact your state wildlife agency before selling an antler basket.
