Just some of the reasons why I like this course very much: 1.I am taught on my own equipment. 2.The teachers are passionate about their topics. They have tons of theoretical knowledge, but also more importantly, many, many, MANY years of industry experience. 3.My fellow students are passionate and professional about their respective fields and the messages they are trying to deliver. (I.e. I get to learn with mature and dedicated classmates.) 4.I hate rules and authority. The manner in which the content is delivered is nurturing and very supportive. I feel I am learning much more by not being confined by a conventional educational institution. My assignments (while geared to teach certain principles) are left to my choice. Topic-wise, there is no issue of what is creative or not, what is taboo or ugly etc or not. We are not “allowed”, but in fact demanded to apply our new skills to explore what WE find interesting. I cannot think of a better approach! 5.The course is incredibly well structured and VERY practical. 6.I like the philosophy behind the learning process throughout the course: Everyone is capable of learning, being creative, contributing and has the right to be heard. 7.The course isnt just about learning technical skills. Its about learning how to communicate effectively in a graphic / audio-visual manner, a message that we are passionate about and trying to get across. Its about learning self-expression. 8.It feels like a multi-disciplinary learning experience. I am learning about filmmaking, but also about baboons, cart-horse, surfing, vfx, storytelling and many other things. (Today I received a beautiful book about baboons from one of my fellow students). 9.One of the big questions on the mind of a late learner to a new field is: “Am I capable of this? Its important to know you can walk into the course with no knowledge or experience of the field whatsoever.” This course is geared exactly for that. 10.We have lots of coffee breaks. There is no stress – just an incredibly supportive educational environment. “Class” feels like a bundle of friends getting together to share experiences, skills and ideas. 11.By the second session we had recorded interviews. By the third session, we had edited these interviews using video editing software. In most cases, each student was unfamiliar in some way or other with their equipment. Still Hein and Ruan helped everyone with their specific setup and got us working with our equipment rapidly. 12.Into our fourth session, we each have our storyboards, shot list and enough confidence to start our own well planned silent film shoot. Honestly, this is an amazing course that I would strongly recommend to any professional interested in picking up filmmaking skills rapidly for whatever reason or message they are trying to get across to a wider audience.
