Just something ive been having to discuss with people for the last few months concerning transmission choice. Going to a longer geared tranny, doesnt get you better gas mileage. In some cases, it can actually hurt your fuel economy. Let me explain a little bit. Depending on where your power and TQ are made can influence the kind of mileage you get in your car. Lets say you have a car that makes peak tq, 200ft/lbs at 4000rpm, but you have a low geared tranny, so when your on the freeway, your at 2300rpms. Your having to apply more throttle to keep the car going 70mph than you would with a shorter geared transmission that is at 4000+RPM while doing 70mph. What this means is you will be getting better fuel economy with a shorter geared transmission able to keep the motor in its TQ range. Just want to let people know that constantly ask me about a LS trans or a GSR with LS 5th gear or wanting to switch to a CX/VX trans for better gas mileage. Most modded cars with more free flowing exhaust, intake, header, intake manifolds, etc. have effectively moved the power production from low end TQ to mid range TQ. Meaning that most cars and especially turbo cars will greatly benefit from a shorter geared transmission able to keep the car in its effective TQ production range. A few members on here can attest that their GSR or B16 transmission cars get better gas mileage after swapping out their LS transmission for performance reasons. The only advantage to switching to a long geared transmission is reducing overall wear and tear on a motor. Which if the motor has been cared for with its regular maintenance, should be of very little concern if any at all. Hope this makes sense and is meant to be food for thought. Thanks for reading.
