Just stumbled on my original hand-sketches dummy for Look! A Book! (Little, Brown - 2011). At first you see how the roughed out cover differs from the one that was ultimately published, but in drawing the layouts for each spread it is apparent that I was more concerned with getting the triple-action die-cuts to fall in exactly the right places -- and then work the crazy imagery around the openings. Honestly, I think sometimes you can learn far more about the craft of book making by looking at preliminary sketches than you can by seeing the final product.
