Just stumbled on this amazing television series introducing Americans to their counterparts in Norway. The first is about a prison warden from New York visiting a Nordic Prison. As an American working in the mental health care system, Im regularly troubled by the amount of Americans in prison (1% of the population!!! Anyone who is not astonished by this number is essentially asleep), the poor/lack of treatment of illnesses like substance dependence or personality disorders, the rise of privatized prisons, and just the general philosophy (and scientifically corrupt) idea that prisons deter crime or that they are meaningfully corrective in terms of helping people live better lives.
