Just talked to a potential client today who was originally from Zimbabwe; came and lived and worked in the US and then moved back to Zimbabwe, where he and his family have lived for the past 8 or 9 years. Prior to moving back, he cosigned on a loan for a friend of his from Zimbabwe. Unbeknownst to my client, his friend kept all of his credit info and opened accounts in his name while he was out of the US. Only when my client moved back to the US and started the process of being approved for a new mortgage did he find out that he had over $250K in debt, all now in collection, thanks to the friend he had tried to help. My poor client is left to sort out this mess while the guilty person is sitting, fat and happy back in Zimbabwe, where he can not be indicted. What a sad sad story.
