Just the other day, a man was senselessly shot and killed on the block I grew up on, and it really has me thinking. Im from Brownsville, Brooklyn. I remember hearing stories that if I hang with the wrong crowd, spend time in the streets, the only future you have is jail or death. At the time, as a teenager, I never thought that was true within the circle of friends I hung with. Truly enough, as I write this, a few of my childhood friends have done jail time or passed. Some, with good grades. Some, whod hold a door open for a woman. They were essentially... good kids. But what catches up to young people... is their love for (and attention they receive for) reckless behavior. And when I look at the parents or household of some of the people I speak of... some of them are broken. I think everything starts in the house. And our home is like a gas station of sorts.. giving us fuel. Sometimes the fuel makes us run good, and sometimes, its just not enough.
