Just the sound of it brought a feeling of we were on top of the world. Young people dressed up in hooded shirts or even winter jackets not knowing for sure if the snow would fly that day. The streets were lined with people and the band came all the way from then Hamady Bros parking lot. The Grand Marshall and the queen and her court all dressed in their day time attire and the floats perfectly spaced apart as they moved in unison down Saginaw st. Of course for some of us it was just a reason to get out of school and spend time with that special person out of the judgments of teachers and authority eyes stopping the hormonal flux of young people. Leading up to this day were hours and hour of folding and folding of paper flowers, bag upon bags of them in colors that would boggle the mind. Secretly the figures would begin to materialize for that special day. “shhh no one can know where were building this thing at”. Of course by the second night of build everybody knew where everybody’s float was. Then night fall came and the excitement building and the opening kickoff in the big field behind the High school. It was on Home coming had pronounced its arrival. Floats lined the long drive way and the girls all dressed in their evening gowns, praying it didn’t rain as they were paraded out ono the field in introduction. Finlay that moment “Her Majesty” is presented. The sparkles of her crown glistening in the light of the field as she takes her place for the years rein of her title. This is usually what strikes me this time of year. I don’t know why I wasn’t much involved with it back then, but something about it the pomp, the ceremony, the excitement all add up to a strange smile and a warm spot in my heart. Do you remember your home coming queen?
