Just thought Id share this photo of an old country schoolhouse (Taylor #5) in Taylor township just north of Marshalltown on the old section of Hwy 14. I grew up just a block or so down the road from this old school and we used to play around it. We could actually get into the entryway, and there were still names in tape on the coat hooks there! Sadly, the school is gone now, so I was thrilled to get the picture recently, and especially to get the old photo of kids out in front of the school, and the old pump there. (I think Id have recognized the location just from the background landscape alone, its so familiar to me.) History is especially cool when it touches on our own lives, like this does for me. I sure wish we could save and restore the few remaining country schools left in Iowa. Marshalltowns Historical Society does have an old school restored as a museum, and theyve held re-enactments there now and then for modern-day school kids, to show them what it was like to attend a country school. I love that!
