Just to be very very clear – this is not about benefits, this is about a flagship scheme that recognised that disabled people make a positive contribution to the economic, social and cultural life of this country, actively fulfilling those British values this Government is so keen to propagate. It acknowledged that sometimes the barriers we put up – stairs, the telephone, narrow- mindedness – mean that extra support is needed to enable people to work; yes – work – pay tax and all. We are not talking great sums of money – we are talking the cost of a BSL interpreter, the cost of a support worker, travel by car as opposed to tube; a small price to pay for a vibrant, diverse, exciting and tolerant society. What is so strange is that the blunt instrument that Access to Work is becoming seems to directly contradict the current agenda to get people into work.
