Just to play the devils advocate: The oceans make up 71% of the planets surface. The deepest part of the ocean is over 35,000 feet. The surface area of the ocean is 335,258,000 sq km. There is a whirling mass of garbage which MAY be as large as the continental US floating around out there, but we still cant figure out how big that really is.... Why are we so surprised that a single airplane is hard to find? Its been weeks now: Could it be that the ocean is gigantic and the plane sank? Sorry to ruin all the fun, but usually the simplest answer is the correct one. Occams Razor.
