Just to recap. This was a trip by patients at the Hunter Holmes McGuire Veterans Hospital in Richmond, Virginia. We were gathered up by our various therapists and invited by this wonderful town to come down for a day of appreciation. What a phenomenal trip. It was pretty difficult for me at first because I dont go anywhere that might involve crowds. The warmth of this town was just overwhelming. I must have gotten at least 2 dozen hugs throughout the day, and trust me, that is no small thing. At the end of the day, all of us veterans had really relaxed and opened up and were like we were in our younger days, full of life and laughter. I will remember this day for a long time. This was the towns inaugural Wounded Warrior Project day and very warmly invited us all to attend next year. I sure hope that happens because Ill be first in line. Virginia Wounded Warrior Program The Virginia Wounded Warrior Program: Enhancing the quality of life for Virginia’s veterans, service members and their families. The Virginia Wounded Warrior Program (VWWP) is operated by the Virginia Department of Veterans Services in cooperation with the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services and the Department of Aging and Rehabilitative Services. Virginia Wounded Warrior Program (VWWP) was established in 2008 in response to the growing need to improve and expand services to our nation’s veterans and their family members coping with the impact of deployment, military service, post-traumatic stress, operational stress and/or traumatic brain injury. VWWP monitors and coordinates the delivery of behavioral health, rehabilitative, and supportive services for Virginia Veterans and their families. The VWWP works to ensure that Virginia Veterans do not slip through the cracks and that adequate and timely assessment, treatment, and support are available to promote resilience and recovery. Through an extensive network of Federal, State, and Local partnerships, the VWWP proudly serves veterans of any era who are Virginia residents; members of the Virginia National Guard and Armed Forces Reserves not in active federal service; and family members of those veterans and service members. Our team, many who personally wore the uniform or stood by a family member in the military, is focused on helping you feel like you again and to assist your family with moving forward with your lives. VWWP provides services statewide through five health planning regions, each with a consortia, including community services boards, brain injury service providers, and other public and private services providers. Our goal is to make it easier for our veterans and their families to find and get help. Our core services include peer and family support with hands on assistance navigating supportive services. VWWP is also proud to serve our most vulnerable veterans including veterans involved in the criminal justice system, incarcerated veterans, and those experiencing homelessness. VWWP specializes in closing service gaps and enhancing response systems for all Veterans in the Commonwealth.
