Just to remind youNATIONAL VOLLEY TEAM ROUT UGANDA IN WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS QUALIFIER Last updated on 28 Jul 2013 00:00 By Oscar Pilipili in Kampala KAMPALA; UGANDA: Kenya beat Uganda in straight sets 3-0 (25-15, 25-22, 25-16) in a thrilling men’s Group H match of 2014 FIVB World Championships African qualifiers at MTN Arena in Lugogo, Kampala. The victory brought Kenya’s win-loss record at the four-nation tournament to 2-0 and enhanced the country’s chances of finishing at the top of the table standings. Kenya was scheduled to play its final match against Burundi last night. The top three finishers, in the event played on round robin format, will move to next stage, which is African Zone Five qualifiers. With memories of the 2011 football African Cup of Nations match between Kenya and Uganda that ended in a barren draw still fresh in memories of most fans in Kampala, the volleyball meeting provided each side with yet another opportunity to confirm its superiority in sports. The intensity of the volleyball fixtures started to be felt a day before the match with fans bracing up to cheer their team to victory. The first set started on a high note with both teams aiming to gain quick points. Double blocks by Captain Ibrahim Oduor and James Ontere and an accurate attack by Philip Maiyo saw Kenya take 2-0 lead before Uganda recovered to narrow the gap at 3-1. Uganda led by left-handed attacker Dickens Otim fought back gallantly but they hardly penetrated Kenya’s water tight defence that featured towering James Ontere, Saul Wafula, Ibrahim Oduor and Mike Chemos. Kenya was ahead 8-3 at first technical time out. Superb reception by libero Julius Kariuki and perfect setting by experienced booster Daniel Kiptoo saw Kenya gain valuable points to take 16-9 advantage at second technical time out. Kenya won the set 25-16 to temporarily silence the vocal Ugandan fans.
