Just to share with you all a case I encountered last week. Uncle Marco is a 65 year old chinese man. He has been neglected by his own son and was living in a small rented room. Being unwell for quite some time..he was unable to pay his monthly rental. Last week he dropped by Kechara Soup Kitchen seeking help as he was evicted from his rented room. We were happy that we we got him to stay at a Shelter home in Kepong. On the day of his admission at the shelter home,I received a call from our good friend Justin Cheah regarding uncle Marcos health condition. Uncle Marco was a soft spoken man. He appeared very lethargic and had generalized body swelling. His both legs were extensively swollen..most probably due to water retention. He said he had no underlying medical conditions before. All I suspected at that time was maybe he was diabetic and there is some problem with his kidneys. I took some blood sample to investigate what could it be. Someone from the lab called me two days later giving me the bad news. All i suspected was kidney failure but never knew it was gonna be HIV positive. I really hate doing this... I hate breaking bad news to my patients. That was one of the reason i dislike working in Hospitals. It emotionally effects me badly but I had no other choice. The first sentence came out from Uncle Marco brought me into tears... I am already 65 years old, I dont want to live anymore..please kill me if you can. I dont want to live with a disease that has no cure......... I just cant imagine whats running in his mind. And we think we are having a bad life!!!????? Be happy and thankful for what you have now...as nothing(except for friendship) lasts forever. On another hand...please be safe... don go and find diseases that you can avoid. Oh ya..and I am sorry for troubling a few of you when I was emotionally down. I blame it on the hormones....
