Just to the east of the previous shots of Twin Bridges and Dark - TopicsExpress

Just to the east of the previous shots of Twin Bridges and Dark Holler is a 270 feet retaining wall built by the Coal Iron early in the last century. Originally of cut stone it was faced with a concrete veneer and also raised 6 feet along with the right of way in the teens as part of a improvement program by the WM. This was to prevent future flooding and loss of revenue which had occurred here frequently in the past..... Now in this mid- summer shot algae blooms are appearing in the waters, signalling the end of any good fishing till fall. By the time this shot was taken in 1952, the river and ravages of time are now slowly eating away at the wall. The old wall had seem more than its share of floods and weathering by time. Large cracks in the concrete facing have now appeared placing the WM in the possession of either spend huge sums to reface the wall or divert the by now diminishing coal traffic over to a unwanted competitors line ..............Warren H
