Just took my dear Chester dog in for a vasectomy. I was really - TopicsExpress

Just took my dear Chester dog in for a vasectomy. I was really nervous. When I went in, the vet said You here for a castration? and I nodded without thinking. He then went to town all over my ass for even daring to think about castration which is the sign of a bloody good vet actually. He said You want to come and spend an average day here with me in the surgery to see how many operations on cruciate ligaments I have to do due to irresponsible owners who want their dogs castrated. You ought to see how many get cancers of all types and die prematurely and who get all kinds of illnesses because of it. He said the testes regulate hormones and that removing them is so unnatural that the dogs bodies begin malfunctioning in all kinds of nasty ways. He also told me that just like when we get osteoporosis, dogs commonly get cruciate ligament deterioration and that the op to fix that costs around $4000 too. It was comical really because here I am, probably the one person who was so worried about getting anything done to my dog whatsoever that I really didnt want to do anything - except that Chester is staying at the Margaret River Pet Retreat In September and I knew I couldnt have him impregnating other female dogs during his stay! So we settled on a vasectomy and the vet was happy, although he didnt really want me to do anything at all, saying there was hormone treatment that can be given before an owner goes on holiday which wears off. It got me thinking that he must be a good vet, because if he does so many of these cruciate ligament ops at $4000 a pop he must make quite a bit of money on that alone but to see how angry he was about people who ask for castrations made me feel very happy. I told him I admired him for being so firm with people and outrightly refusing to do it and if all vets took a stand like that dogs would be a lot better off wouldnt they - and after all..... Chester means so much to me, I was literally nervous taking him in like I would be my own child and our pets deserve the best. If you know anyone who didnt know this before, please educate them on the high risks of castration in dogs and allow them to keep that part of their body. He said they can technically still hump another dog but can never get them pregnant with a vasectomy and he said its a myth that dogs go around humping things if theyre not fixed anyway which is true because Chester only did it for about a month as a pup and he never does that anymore. He also said that its a myth regarding the effects of aggression in an un castrated dog as well, saying that dogs who are aggressive are messed up in the head because they are a product of their owners and how theyve been trained. I applauded him on that one as well. Lovely to meet a good vet today and know that my dear little Chester is in good hands!
