Just wanted to say hello, and thank you for letting me join the group! I currently have 2 Greater Swiss Mountain dogs, both female; 1 is 5yrs. old, and the other is 7. I got my pups when I lived in Massachusetts where it was nice and comfy in the snow. Since I moved to TX our lifestyle has changed drastically. Their sensitivity to heat is very high, and being an active person, I really have to plan any activities I want to do with my dogs outside in the heat. Basically cant take them for a hike in the summer unless its before sunrise or near a place they can swim. Im the type of person who likes to plan and prepare, so as much as I love the Greater Swiss Mountain dog breed, Once my pups have passed on, Id rather get a breed that does not suffer in the heat. Which led me to the Rhodesian. Also, I have always loved big dogs, and like to horseback ride, so they seem like a good fit. One of my concerns about a hound though is that they may not stay with me off leash. All my dogs have been off leash trained so that I can take them anywhere, however, all my dogs have been working dogs, so they never wandered. Are Rhodesians like other hounds that would rather go sniff or run and investigate, or do they have a stronger bond to their people? Your feedback would be much appreciated!
