Just wanted to update my friends on the situation with my dad. Over a week ago, he fell in the memory care facility he had moved into 3 weeks earlier. Without going into too much detail, they waited far too long to transport him to the hospital. As a result, he suffered some serious related health issues. After a week in the hospital we have settled with the fact that Hospice was most appropriate. He was moved to hospice last night and is resting very comfortably. While this is certainly a profoundly sad time for my family, anyone who knows me….also knows that I consider myself quite fortunate to still have my folks at my age. There are not many in my peer group who can say the same. The weeks ahead will be difficult. As my dad has traveled a long journey with Alzheimers Disease, he still occasionally was able to provide me the “gift” of himself. Those gifts became fewer and farther between, but increased in value to me with each occurrence . My mother has been an amazing caregiver for him. She has sacrificed her own health to take care of him, and kept him home just as long as possible. Beyond my hope that you will pray and wish my dad peace and tranquility, I also hope that if you still have your Mom and Dad with you…..that you pick up the phone today, go for a visit……tell them how much you love them.
