Just watched Lee Daniels The Butler. I didnt really care for it. - TopicsExpress

Just watched Lee Daniels The Butler. I didnt really care for it. Unlike 12 Years A Slave I didnt get the feeling that the story of Black American oppression was truly conveyed and certainly not felt. I also feel a great opportunity to give some behind closed doors insights into how the U.S. Presidents felt and what they said and did re: civil and human rights was missed. When telling a story you need to know as a writer and filmmaker what the story is. Its like a photograph. When I have done my photography I say to myself whats the photo? Out of everything in this frame what is compelling? And with this film I didnt find the personal story of this one mans job as a butler to multiple presidents the story. To me the story is/was American race relations and black life in the 20th century culminating in the election of the first black president Barack Obama in 2008. The attempt was made to do so but not very well in my opinion. I felt like I was watching a somewhat tame, and palatable (perhaps worried about the reaction of some in a certain demographic) story but not a compelling, gripping and must watch one.
