Just watched a very interesting show on BBC America; “Bang Goes The Theory.” They explained exactly how a Nuclear Reactor works and cleared up a lot of the misconceptions. Like many others; I used to think that the electricity created was a direct result of the nuclear reaction. Imagine my surprise to find out that just like a regular Power Plant; the electricity is produced by steam! The nuclear rods are used to boil the water; and the flow of water over the rods is used to regulate the temperature (less water = more heat; more water = less heat). The same way a kettle of water on the stove can overheat and melt if all the water evaporates; so can the rods overheat and “meltdown” if they run out of water. This doesn’t happen instantly, and just like the kettle has a whistle to warn of the impending disaster, so too does the Nuclear Power Plant. Technology and Information should always go hand-in-hand to avoid misconceptions and undue fears. #Knowledge
