Just watched the full video of the traffic incident with Oriana Ferell here in Taos that has recieved national attention. My gut reaction is, Taos, Im ashamed. This should not have happened. Clearly, she made some mistakes but is it really law that you have to sign the traffic citation on the spot? Its been so long I cant remember and it just seems funky and a bad reason to get in an argument. It seems reasonable to allow the driver the time to make a decision on something like that. Beyond that... shooting at a car full of kids, breaking the car window with a club, engaging in a high speed chase, pointing a taser at the teenage son- what was the police officer thinking?? The real question, to me, is would this woman and her family have been treated this way if they were not black? The other thing that really bothers me is the complete lack of mention of the issue of race in the coverage by the taos news. With the number of black people, especially young black men, who get shot and killed by police officers, its reasonable for black people to be on edge when dealing with police, especially in a town with a very low black population.
