Just watched the press conference for the BAA/Boston Marathon, and I have to say they just ruined the Marathon because of rampant paranoia. Strollers will not be allowed on the route - so cant bring your kids. No backpacks, so you cant bring drinks and snacks - no diabetics visiting Copley Square in an environment where you cant get food not overloaded with carbs and sugar, and the only healthy alternatives cost an arm and a leg. It also means no camelpacks for runners if they needed water on the route. An armed soldier every twentieth of a mile, and more police than ever before to randomly search anyone in the area with a backpack or bag — you might as well shut down every business in Copley Square and all along the route since all of them put your purchases in bags that will be searched. Sacrificing freedom for safety provides neither. Welcome to the Police State, Boston. Im less likely to go in to watch the race now, as is probably about a fifth to a quarter of people originally planning to go. Lets see if they actually report on the decrease in participation come Marathon Tuesday.
