Just watched this clip from 1999. I would highly encourage everyone, especially those facing an obstacle in their lives to watch it. These are some of the lessons I believe we can all learn from this short clip : 1) Everything big started small, with a dream. No one (maybe only Jack Ma) could have, in that small room; envision that in just 15 years later, they will release the biggest ipo ever that surpassed all other giant tech corps. 2) Dare to dream and compete. It is important to compete with the big boys. When your goals are bigger than you, the problems that would otherwise seem big, will now appear small. Alibaba dared to compete on the world stage. They set their sights on a market that challenged them 3) Its not just enough to work hard, we have to work smart. Capitalise and take advantage of our strengths. Create a strong differentiating factor. Constantly Innovate. Jack very early on, knew he could not compete based on hardware and systems. So he placed his focus on software and other areas they had a natural advantage to. 4) Be prepared to pay the painful price of success. Very early on, Jack Ma knew that if they had adopted the practises of unsuccessful companies or fell back to working within their comfort zones, in Jacks own words, they will never be successful. 5) It is never too late! Although Alibaba IPOed 12 years away from his initial dream, it set the stage and made Alibaba the strong juggernaut that it is today. Rushing for the ipo then may have things turn out differently. Lie low, work on ownself, do not rush to call oneself king and constantly try to sharpen our skills and knowledge. 6) Opportunities are all around us. It is expected that not everyone in the room bought in into Jacks dream. For those that did AND paid the price with him, were handsomely rewarded. Then there will also be those who felt they knew enough or too much. 15 years on, they will be the ones weeping and wondering what Jack Ma did right. Norton Ng Shawn Goh Zhan Lun Chew Jonah Song
