Just watching the news and I see that another truck has had a mishap in one of the Sydney tunnels. Whilst we all feel that the person driving the truck should be drawn and quartered for causing so much chaos, none of us know the circumstances of the incident. Having said that, I think the designers of these tunnels need to be called to task. To reduce incidents on our roads we really have to design them, not for the person that does the right thing, but for that random person that doesnt. This type of thing has happened now on numerous occasions and the economic repercussions must really be horrendous - people not getting to work or getting there late and we will not even get into the emotive side of things! I was taught, admittedly years long ago, that you have the three E,s where the reduction of these incidents may occur. They are Engineering, Education then Enforcement. Our infrastructure should always be designed, not for the good driver but for the one person that is likely to cause havoc, death, injury or just mere inconvenience. Obviously these tunnels, overpasses etc etc etc have not taken the into consideration that odd occasion where an unusual event should occur. If it happens once, okay, if it happens often then in my way of thinking the designers have stuffed up big time! These tunnels have not been constructed to take into account ALL the users of the road. Bad design!
