Just when I was getting excited about the new Page One Concept - TopicsExpress

Just when I was getting excited about the new Page One Concept Store at Harbour City, Dymocks announced today that they will exit Hong Kong. After a 15-year stint, the Australian company has finally had it with the sky-high rent and a non-existent reading culture here. It will close its IFC flagship by the end of this month to make room for more jewelry and watch stores, because who needs books when they can drop six figures on a piece of wearable wealth on their wrists? In the meantime, Eslite 誠品 has decided to shorten the business hours of its Hysan Place megastore, quite a departure from its original goal of running a 24-hour bookstore. The Taiwanese chain has overestimated Hong Kongers love for the written word, and is frankly tired of running a library where shoppers browse magazines and take screenshots of travel books instead of buying them. In the last month, Eslite has gradually expanded its bubble tea bar which has been the only money-making area in the 3-story space. People love to tell me that the demise of the bookstore is caused by the electronic media. But I read e-books on my iPad or I use a Kindle is just an euphemism for I spend 3 seconds browsing my Facebook feed for news. In fact, Ive never seen ANYONE read an electronic book on the MTR or anywhere else for that matter. Is there no hope for our city?? scmp/news/hong-kong/article/1678380/bookseller-dymocks-close-flagship-ifc-mall-store-and-hong-kong-office realdealhk/2012/08/retail-review-eslite.html
