Justice!- What all humanity enshrines Within its heart, what all desire, demand Is yours alone to grant, yours to command But all our wisdom cannot help us when Good will is banished from the heart of men When a wild fever rages out of hand And daily spreads new ills throughout the land Whoever looks down from this height will seem To see the realm in an ugly dream Where monstrous shapes and apparitions teem The very laws the lawless mobs protect And error spreads across the world unchecked Cattle are taken, sisters, wives Churches are stripped of priceless treasure The thieves go free, and spend their lives Enjoying the fruits of crime at leisure Plaintiffs throng the court with pleas The judges sit with pampered ease And meanwhile in a swelling flood Sedition seethes and bays for blood For those who flaunt their evil deeds Accomplices will twist the law; But any innocent who pleads For justice is condemned for sure And so the country falls to pieces And decency is put to flight Where shall we find, when justices ceases A sense of what is good and right? An honest man will turn in time To those who flatter, bribe, degrade A judge who cannot punish crime Will join a villain in his trade It is a sombre scene; I would Veil it more darkly if I could
