Justice and Defence Minister Edgar Lungu says he handed over power to Vice President Guy Scott in the interest of peace and stability in the country. To me this is a very worrisome statement. I thought this was constitutional and according to the law. Now if he says he did it in the interest of peace and stability, to me it sounds like he could have refused, thus breaching the constitution and then causing confusion and anarchy. He should simply say that in handing over the instruments of power he followed the law. Full stop. Otherwise in as much as he may have wanted to gain support or public sympathy, this is a serious blunder on the part of Mr. Lungu. I expected a better statement from him as Justice Minister.
