Justice campaigner says 20-year sentence handed to Ann Maguires - TopicsExpress

Justice campaigner says 20-year sentence handed to Ann Maguires schoolboy killer is too long because it is more than his own lifetime ...But former magistrate Penelope Gibbs, who chairs the Standing Committee for Youth Justice (SCYJ) umbrella group of charities and campaign groups, said the sentence was too long. She told the BBC Radio 4 Today programme: ‘We are out of line with the whole of western Europe. ‘There are no other countries within Western Europe which give children - and this boy is seen as a child under the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and is in the youth justice system - who would give children a life sentence.’ Gibbs is the kind of person who has contributed to our criminal justice system becoming the laughing stock of the developed world. This child is clearly a dangerous psychopath and there is growing evidence that there were numerous missed opportunities for intervention (missed by apologists like Gibbs) where action would almost certainly have prevented the murder of Ann Maguire. I have no qualms whatsoever with the thought of Cornick being permanently incarcerated. DL
