K1.2m stolen at Malawi Housing Corporation The Malawi Housing Corporation (MHC) regional offices on Tuesday lost money amounting to K1.2 million to theft. The money was stored in a cash chest at the premises. Southern Region Police spokesperson Nicholas Gondwa confirmed the development yesterday, saying they are still investigating the matter. Gondwa said police suspect that those who stole the money used a duplicate key with which they opened the cash chest as it was not broken. “We suspect that those thieves entered the building through a toilet which connects to the ceiling then reached the corridor. “They, then, opened the door to the room housing the cash chest, took the money and left. But there was no breaking anywhere,” Gondwa said. He said no one had since been arrested over the incident but investigations were underway to track down the culprits. MHC is a statutory body established in 1964 under the Malawi Housing Corporation Act, Chapter 32:02 of the Laws of Malawi. It is wholly owned by the Government and it is mandated and responsible for, management of houses and housing estates, and development and construction of houses and housing estates among others. - By Simeon Maganga
