KAKAMEGA DIOCESE GETS NEW BISHOP The Holy Father, Pope Francis has appointed Rev. Fr. Joseph Obanyi Sagwe as the new bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Kakamega. Bishop-elect Joseph Obanyi replaces Bishop Emeritus Philip Sulumeti whose retirement was accepted in November 2012 by the Holy Father, Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI. Until his appointment, Bishop-elect Obanyi was serving as the Vicar General at the Catholic Diocese of Kisii where he has served as a priest for the last 18 years. The Apostolic Nuncio to Kenya, His Excellency Archbishop Charles Daniel Balvo broke the news of the appointment, and presented the Bishop-elect to the priests and religious gathered at the Bishop Nicholas Stam Pastoral and Animation Centre – Kakamega, on Friday 5th December, 2014. Speaking at his presentation, Bishop-elect Obanyi said his first mission will be to unite Christians and strengthen the Church. “We should work together to build a strong Church. We should ensure that we live in harmony, peace, love and unity so that we can achieve our mission of leading our people,” he said. Bishop-elect Obanyi, the third born in a family four, was born in Nyakemincha Village, Nyamira County in 1967 and studied at Ibara Primary School before sitting for his O Levels at St. Johns Minor Seminary in Rakwaro, Migori County. He sat his A Levels at Mother of Apostles Seminary, Eldoret, and then enrolled for a programme in Spirituality at St. Marys Seminary Molo. He then proceeded to St. Augustine Seminary, Mabanga, for his Philosophy Degree Studies in 1990-1991 and St. Thomas Aquinas Major Seminary for His Theology Degree from 1992-1995. He was ordained priest for the Diocese of Kisii on 25th October 1996. After ordination, he served as a Parish Vicar and Diocesan Coordinator for Pastoral Care between 1996 and 1999. Between 1999 and 2004 he was a student at the Pontifical Lateran University where he obtained a Masters Degree in Canon Law. He later studied at the same university for his PhD in Canon Law. Upon his return in 2004, he became the Parish Priest at Kisii Cathedral and in 2005, Vicar General of the Diocese of Kisii.
