KAKAMEGA GREEN WALK AND RUN... Sharons story...behind a bright but needy child are many others As we do our countdown to the Green Run, now only 12 days away, we continue to tell you the stories of our beneficiaries at Tusomeshe Watoto Kakamega county. As promised yesterday, today I tell you about Sharon. Once, we finally managed to trace the home of David (the Lenana boy that went to Musingu under Tusomeshe), Joseph Eululo went to meet him in person in his home at Mwitoti, to cross check his neediness and just have a talk with him. He asked him about the results and how the others in his class had faired. David then told Joseph that the top girl in his class, Khabakaya primary (Mumias East), had scored 380 points and had been selected to Butere girls (newly elevated to national school). So Joseph enquires further wheres she? Has she reported? David said he wouldnt know for real, but looked like not. Once again, Joseph follows up Sharons story only to realise that Sharon, who lives with her grandfather, a peasant in Mumias, is scheduled to report to a local day school. Now, it became a dilemma. The criteria decided upon in our forum had been categorical, one child one constituency. So Mumias East having David already, what do we do? We reported to the Kakamega county facebook forum the dilemma we all found ourselves in, as TWKC. By then, we had been pushing members to donate so that at 10least children were in form one. Some members sending just 100Ksh, some surprising us, with 4 figure donations. We decided this would be the very last child we were donating to for this year 2014. I remember us running the online fund raising for Sharon till very late in the evening. Once that was done, we still did not have the money to purchase the requirements on the list for reporting to school. Fortunately, by then everyone within Kakamega had heard of Tusomeshe. Thus a member Fredrick Obongita Osore mobilised the group Friends of Mumias, who then run a funds drive in their group to do Sharons shopping. Our treasurer Suzzan Mudavuda, an alumni of Butere girls, called the principal and beseeched her to keep Sharons place. 3 days later, one of the daughters of Mumias Genevieve Wanyama, accompanied Sharon to report to her dream school. Sharon started off so brilliantly as her report card of first term attests. Having reported as 80th performer in term of KCPE results, she came 25th out of 329. She has continued to perform well since. Once again providence being on our side, a son of Mumias asked to sponsor one of the Tusomeshe children, at the end of first term. We immediately thought of Sharon. Thus, Sharon now has a sponsor, and it enabled us to share whatever fees we had in our kitty amongst the beneficiaries directly paid for by TWKC and cleared their fees for the whole year. All these children will be in Kakamega during the Green Run. Come and be part of writing of history...Run and educate a child.
