KAKAMPI MO ANG BATAS.SYNDICATED, ENGLISH. 30 JULY 2013 Give back MWSS billions to the people LIFE’S INSPIRATIONS: “…Would your wealth or even all your mighty efforts sustain you so you would not be in distress?” (Job 36:19, the Holy Bible). -ooo- MWSS BILLIONS: WHO SHOULD BENEFIT FROM THEM? So, the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) is earning billions now under the Aquino government. But should those earnings be used to reward its officials whose main job description is really to make it earn anyway, or should the money be used instead to further improve the agency and make potable water more accessible to millions of people? Are not MWSS officials government officials, too, who are already being paid fantastic salaries and allowances, precisely to do their job, just like the rest of the bureaucracy? Why is there a need to give additional fat bonuses to MWSS officials who merely did their jobs as expected of them anyway? How about other government officials who have been doing their jobs comparably well in other government agencies which do not generate money, but which are similarly involved in the delivery of equally-important and equally-urgent basic services? The government will just say “thank you” to them, and bid them to continue performing their work? -ooo- MWSS BILLIONS CAME FROM CONSUMERS’ MONEY: What is revolting here is the fact that, the billions of pesos that the MWSS supposedly earned actually came from the high water rates that its concessionaires have been collecting from Metro Manila residents, and from the residents of adjacent provinces which are covered by the concessionaires’ franchises. In short, the MWSS billions represent the blood, sweat and tears of water users, who are compelled---as they do not have any other alternative, since the MWSS is a water monopoly---to pay ultra high water rates. The question is: since the MWSS is a government agency that is mandated to provide a very basic service to the people, why should it be concerned about earning billions? What the MWSS should be concerned about, really, is making potable and clean water accessible and available to its customers, at rates that are not oppressive and designed as if the MWSS is a private corporation whose only reason for being is profits, and nothing else. The MWSS must forever remember that it is a government entity that is sworn to serve the people, nothing more, nothing less. -ooo- GIVE BACK MWSS BILLIONS TO THE PEOPLE: Viewed in this light, it is therefore greatly scandalous, to say the least, for the Aquino government to be even defending the grant of fat bonuses to MWSS officers. Those bonuses should be channeled back to the people, in terms of lower rates, and wider coverage of service. That was what we all said in 2010, when the Aquino government first took over Malacanang. I wonder what happened in the interim, between 2010 and 2013, that we now see top officials of the Office of the President espousing the welfare of MWSS officers rather than the welfare of water consumers? Something took place here, undeniably. Well, for those who desire to earn so much for themselves, Jesus Christ, our God and Savior, has a word of advice for all you. He said, in Matthew 16:26: “What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul?” In Job 1:21, it is there written: “…`Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked I will depart’…” What this means is that, wealth and riches will not help us when the time comes! -ooo- REACTIONS?
