KALESHWAR SHIVA TEMPLE Location: Kaleshwar village, 65 k.m. from Santiniketan Ownership: Public (Trust). Function: Temple Status: Unprotected Special features: 1. Significance: The Kaleshwar Shiva temple being 120 ft high is the tallest temple of the Birbhum District. 2. Physical description: Constructed in form of Pancharatna style this temple is situated on a high platform followed by five steps. Though this temple is the main temple at present, but is actually the third built temple constructed on the same place. The previous two has been destroyed. One Bhairav temple, older to this Shiva temple is present just opposite to this main temple keeping one Natmandapa in between. At the left side there are three temples, one of Parvati, one of Vishnu and another of Shiva. Another small Bengal type temple of Shiva is also present on the right side. Arrangements for guests as Yatrinivas are also there inside the same compound. 3. Decorative features: The entrance of the Garvagriha is carefully kept with collapsing gates and wooden doors. The temple is elaborately decorated with floral designs at the entrance of the veranda with two tall round pillars and two square pillars forming five arches. Important to note is the mural paintings all over the walls of the Garvagriha showing Dasabatar, Krishnalila, Ramlila, Kali, Durga, Chhinnamasta and other Hindu Gods and Goddesses. The original paintings have been retouched when renovated. Materials: Brick, cement plastering. State of preservation: Good. Date: A.D.1600 (renovated in A.D. 1939).
