KalimNews, Kalimpong, 3 September 2013: Lepchas of Darjeeling hills acknowledged their gratitude by honouring Mamata Banerjee Chief Minister of the state by conferring with “Kingchum Daarmit” (Goddess of Fortune) an honorary title at the Mela Ground in Kalimpong today. For the formation of the Lepcha Development Board by the TMC government led by Mamata Banerjee, a felicitation programme was organised by Indigenous Lepcha Tribal Association (ILTA) which was attended by a huge crowd of Lepchas. She declared that Lepcha Development Authority will be formed and given a grant of Rupees 50 crore and further developmental projects and financial grants are sanctioned, employment opportunities in GTA and others for the Lepcha people including teaching of Lepcha language in Primary schools. She further announced grants for the construction of Lepcha library, cultural and Community centre, jobs for 5000 Lepcha youths in police department. She claimed that 1lakh 50 thousand Lepchas live in Darjeeling hills and they are the aboriginals of the land. Addressing the Lepchas Ms Banerjee challenged the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) leadership that Gorkhaland is next to impossible and the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) is the only alternative which has already been granted for the betterment of the hill people.It has the term Gorkhaland for their identity and thats all we could do. Due to GJM there is no peace and harmony in the hillsm she said. She further said that GJM President Bimal Gurung is not the King of the hills. Only during the days of the Kings people were forced to remain inside their houses whenever the king desired. He cannot treat the people of the hills as his subject. The leaders of the party are after the money and power. The poor people are dying of hunger but the leaders are enjoying in luxury. She repeated "Darjeeling belongs to us! Kalimpong, Mirik, Kurseong, the entire Hills, this entire region belongs to us! It does not belong to one single community but to all who loves it. People who wants to own these areas for themselves for their selfish desire but we cannot let it happen. She also said that Morcha is invited for constructive but not destructive talk. Meanwhile the home ministry has called upon GJM to withdraw the indefinite strike for tripartite talks. The team led by MP Jaswant Singh met Sushil kumar Shinde Union Home Minister who made it clear to the team that tripartite talks will be possible only if the indefinite strike is withdrawn. The delegation included three Hills’ MLAs Harka Bahadur Chhetri, Triloke Dewan, Rohit Sharma, former MP and CPRM president R B Rai. Darjeeling MP Jaswant Singh, GJMM general secretary Roshan Giri, former Darjeeling MP and the Darjeeling Congress (Hills) Mr K B Chhetri. Kolkata high court has issued a contempt of court notice to Bimal Gurung and Roshan Giri of GJM for violating the direction of court in calling the strike in the hills. The case will be heard on Thursday the 4th September.
