KARACHI: The funeral prayers of spokesperson of the Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat (ASWJ) Maulana Akber Saeed Farooqi were offered on Monday morning at the National Highway after which his body will be sent to his native area of Mohmand Agency for burial. The attendants of the funeral also staged a sit-in at the National Highway before prayers while the supporters continued to demonstrate after the prayers at Shahrae Faisal. Before the funeral prayers that were held in Abbot Company area of Quaidabad, ASWJ Karachi chief Aurangzeb Farooqi condemned the killing, saying that a conspiracy was being hatched against the party. He said that target killing of their workers is compelling them to take an extreme initiative. He demanded the government to arrest those involved in the murder on immediate basis. The body of ASWJ spokesman will be sent to his ancestral area, Mohmand Agency, for his burial. Unremitting gun violence in the city claimed the lives of at least eight people on Sunday, including the spokesperson of the ASWJ Maulana Akber Saeed Farooqi and three activists of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement. In reaction to the sectarian killings in Bhakkar, Punjab, ASWJ leaders and activists had gathered in Lasbela to stage a protest. After attending the demonstration, ASWJ Sindh spokesman Maulana Akber Saeed Farooqi, who was in his 30s, was on his way home to Metroville III, Mubina Town, on a motorcycle, when two motorcyclists opened fire on him near Safari Park on the University Road. Gulshan-e-Iqbal SHO Muhammad Irfan said the wounded man was taken to the Liaquat National Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. He had suffered two bullets to the upper torso. The victim, who hailed from Mohmand Agency, was also the pesh imam of Ameer Mavia Masjid in Metroville III. Following the incident, tension spread in various parts of the city, including the localities of University Road, Stadium Road, Civic Centre and Guru Mandir, where ASWJ leaders and activists staged protests against the murder and torched tyres on the roads. Moreover, unidentified miscreants resorted to aerial firing in the Gulshan Division, where they forced traders to close their businesses.
