KAREN DAWN NEWS : On Friday night, June 6, while I was up at the wonderful Farm Sanctuary in Orland settling Anne and Jessica Turkey into their forever home, Farm Sanctuary’s Bruce Friedrich was on the HLN Network (CNN’s) talking to host Jane Velez-Mitchell about the lack of enforcement of federal humane slaughter laws. He explained that there are no USDA inspectors at the points of slaughter and he thereby compared the effectiveness of the slaughter laws to that which we would see for speed limits if we had no cops on the road anywhere and nobody had ever gotten a speeding ticket. He said it was worse to have unenforced humane slaughter laws than none at all because people believed there to be a safety net that does not, in practice, exist. Velez-Mitchell aired undercover video taken by various groups that have infiltrated factory farms and slaughterhouses. She said that if anybody did to her dog what was being done to the animals in the videos theyd be viewed as a monster. Friedrich and Velez-Mitchell both made the point that dogs are not fundamentally different from other animals. When asked what people could do to make a difference, Friedrich recommended that Velez-Mitchells listeners who didnt want to support what they were seeing on the screen should adopt vegetarian or vegan diets. He also noted that Farm Sanctuary would be pressuring the USDA to get the agency to pay at least some attention to what is going on in slaughterhouses and he asked people to visit Farm Sanctuarys website to be kept up to date on the issue. I recommend you sign up for their legislative updates. You can do that at farmsanctuary.org/get-involved/federal-legislation/ Youll see Sign up for updates on the right side of the screen. It was a superb segment. Jane Velez-Mitchell is an outspoken vegan activist but she does not have free reign over all of her programming, so notes of support for this type of content help her to help the animals. Please check out the segment and share it widely: hlntv/video/2014/06/06/usda-protecting-farm-animals And please thank the show for the animal friendly coverage.
