KASHAMU ACCUSES OBASANJO OF FURLLING PDP CRISIS •UPDATED BY Akinpelu Sodiq • A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State, Mr. Buruji Kashamu, has accused former President Olusegun Obasanjo of deceit over his role in the crisis rocking the party. In a statement issued by Kashamu which was made available to THISDAY yesterday, he accused Obasanjo of being the brain behind the actions of the “so-called seven aggrieved governors and their collaborators.” According to him, “The events leading to the current storm in a tea cup are all too familiar to warrant a recount here. But true to my character, what I find unsettling and difficult to understand is the pretensions of some of our leaders who are now masquerading as peacemakers. There is sufficient evidence that they are accessories after the fact. They were part and parcel of the gang up against the presidency and the leadership of the party.” He further added that: “Let me state from the outset that while it is true that Obasanjo is my adopted political father and I am one of his foot soldiers, it is also true that I have learned from him the virtues of courage and how to speak the truth to power, irrespective of whose ox is gored.” Kashamu said he and other leaders of the party would resist any attempt to create a parallel executive in the state in particular and the South-west in general, as directed by the former president. He said the full weight of the law would be brought to bear on anyone or group who tried to open a parallel executive, adding: “It is common knowledge that prison terms await anyone who holds the court in contempt.” The PDP chieftain lampooned the former acting National Chairman of the party, Alhaji Abubakar Kawu Baraje and former Governor of Osun State, Olagunsoye Oyinlola, “for having the effrontery to throw jab at the presidency and the party that made them politically.” He said it was regrettable that the duo “a civil servant turned politician and a retired soldier,” could resort to self-help by proclaiming themselves as “National Chairman and “National Secretary” in spite of the fact that they both have pending criminal contempt proceedings against them in Suit No FHC/L/CS/1248/2011 and FHC/ABJ/CS/504/2012." “It is an aberration and an affront to the judiciary, party and the Federal Government. It is regrettable that the duo has lent themselves to perpetrating another round of illegalities with these false claims,” he said. While urging party faithful to keep faith with President Goodluck Jonathan and the National Chairman, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, Kashamu said he would provide all the needed support to the plaintiffs to ensure “that Baraje and Oyinlola are punished for their contemptuous acts against the judiciary and the presidency.”
