KATH DOCTORS RESORTING TO BLACKMAIL BUT THEY CAN GO TO HELL A police officer under whose watch a jail break occurs is held liable for it. A prison officer under whose watch a prisoner escapes is held liable for it. Many professionals, including doctors the world over accept that they must be held liable for any mishap that occurs under their watch. However, a section of Ghana’s doctors at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) who are now the monarchs of all they can survey, are insisting that they are untouchables and therefore cannot and must not be held liable even if their negligence or misconduct leads to the death of a patient or any other mishap. Last week, following the Ministry of Health’s directives for the doctor and nurse on duty at the hospital when Suwaiba’s baby was born to proceed on leave and the warning that any health professional found to have been negligent in the missing baby scandal will be severely punished, the doctors at the KATH vowed from then on to work according to only international standards which require that each doctor attends to only three patients a day. According to the doctors, if they are going to be punished for any negligence on their path, then they will only work under what are best international practices. Reports have it that they have already embarked on their go slow action as long queues are being witnessed at the hospital because the doctors are reluctant to attend to them. That this is an attempt to turn patients against the government is clear to all and sundry. The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) not surprisingly, supports the action by the KATH doctors. But, many Ghanaians are tired and fed up with the way these doctors and the leadership of the Ghana Medical Association have been using the health and life of Ghanaians as bargaining chip and are in no mood to tolerate them this time round. Callers to radio programmes discussing the issue slammed the KATH doctors, accusing them of blackmail and of being hypocrites. One caller asked if the teachers who taught the doctors to become what they are now demanded the best international standards before teaching them. On social media, particularly facebook and twitter, many described the action by the doctors as pure blackmail to which they will not kowtow. They insisted that the doctors can go to hell and that their actions will not prevent them from demanding the return of Suwaiba’s baby dead or alive. Below are some of the postings on the issue on facebook. They are published unedited; Kwabena Boateng writes “ Dey can go to hell for all we care. Its too barbaric only in ......can dis happen. I support de guy who said tweaaaaaaaa.” Says Emmanuel Abanga, “Are they saying if indeed one of them is negkigent on duty he shd not be reprimanded because they over work?Naked blackmail. Why are they afraid the probe will reveal a lot rot with respect to missing babies?” Phyllis Mensah says of the doctors; “ They don’t expect to beat us and prevent us from crying too. All we asking is for them to give us back baby Suwaiba and the 4 other babies #Dasor they can go to hell and rest there who cares Nana Yaw Asare – “So the solution 2 de pressure @ KATH x to steal babies???? Or x d@ a way protestin d@ der x pressure on de facility??? They shd bring de babies 1st, and we will find proper solution 2 deir p...... Dead or alive” Fuseini Issah writes, “ No matter how Dr. Serebour and GMA try twisting the saga, the end results still remain; where are the missing babies? All you know is fact salaries and living luxurious Says Nana Yaw Asare. “KATH can choose to deny everythin..... We need de baby dead or alive!” Musah Ali Konne states, “ Interesting times! Simply bcos uv been told to produce a stolen baby u wanna show-off? Abaaaa. They can drink the entire water in the korle lagoon! What do we care? Them go produce the baby whiles crying! I think they need to be examined!” Ewurefua Hill Essilfie says “ That is their cup of Tea. What we need now is the baby dead or alive” Nana Kweku Ampofo Sam says the doctors “can attend to even half patient, we need our baby. Whether dead or alive there will be a DNA. Baby stealers.” Seth Atannga writes that “ those who are ready to work should work, the rest can pack out we ready to die under the care of good health professionals than live under those who will steal babies and stillborns”
