KBC Desk: When Kings Go Forth The biblical book of I Kings, chapter 22, has the sobering story of a corrupt spirit enticing a king to start a war. This influence, we are told, seemed to onlookers to merely be a by-product of the political situation. The evil spirit simply swayed the kings advisers to give him poor counsel. Based on their advice, the king made a political decision to start a war. The judgment cost him his life. In the last book of the New Testament, we have the story of spirits of demons performing miraculous signs (Revelation 16:14). These depraved spirits go out to the kings of the whole world, to gather them for the battle on the great day of God Almighty (verse 14). In this case, the demons are pictured as carefully orchestrating and stage-managing a worldwide zeitgeist. They are shown luring all nations into a final military struggle for control of the city of Jerusalem. This event, says the book of Revelation, ushers in the cosmic catastrophe in the last days of human civilization. It climaxes at the time of the Messiahs return. The Revelation account ends on a positive note, however. It tells us God thwarts the villainous attempt of Satan and his demons to obliterate the human family. Satan is bound for a thousand years in a locked and sealed abyss to keep him from deceiving the nations any more (Revelation 20:3). This happy event, described in Yehoshuas gospel message, ushers in Gods zeitgeist of peace, justice for all and happiness---the Millennium.
