KEEPING YELLOWKNIFE CLEAN YELLOWKNIFE, NORTHWEST TERRITORIES | July 22, 2013 The City of Yellowknife is excited to announce a new program to help reduce litter in Yellowknife. Municipal Enforcement Officers and Council members are handing out gift certificates throughout the summer and fall to individuals who are seen voluntarily stopping to pick up garbage. “The City often hears from residents regarding litter in our ditches, and on our trails or roadways. Offering a reward for randomly picking up garbage helps promote good citizenry and heightens awareness surrounding the importance of properly disposing of garbage,” said Mayor Mark Heyck. Residents who receive a City of Yellowknife gift certificate can redeem them for payment towards many of the services the City offers (book a facility, purchase a flex pass, pay a library fine, register for a program, etc.). Interacting with residents to help maintain the City’s cleanliness is not a new concept for the City. The City also offers a Spring Clean Up grant to not-for-profit organizations who participate in a week long, city wide garbage collection, an Adopt-A-Street program as well as Amnesty and Hazardous Waste Week. Currently there are 100 members adopting over 45 km of streets and trails and 14.5 hectares of green space within the City. Any citizen, group of citizens, public service group or office may adopt a street, block, park, trail, subdivision or neighborhood and be responsible for the general cleanliness of the area.
