KENNY DREW (1928-1993) was born on this date. In his early career he performed with many of the leading jazz artists of the 1950s, participating in classic sessions led by John Coltrane, Howard McGhee, Buddy DeFranco, Coleman Hawkins, Lester Young, and on several dates under his own leadership for Blue Note, Verve, and Riverside. He left the US for Europe in 1961, eventually settling in Copenhagen. His career seemed to reach new heights in Copenhagen, where he began a long musical partnership with bassist Niels-Henning Orsted Pederson.
