KENYA: UNHCR concerned over state of Somali refugees In a press release on Monday, the UNHCR expressed its concern over the number of Somali refugees arrested by Kenyan authorities. Police swept through the Eastleigh neighborhood in Nairobi, home to Kenyas largest community of Somali refugees and asylum seekers, an area where numerous terrorist attacks have occurred. About 4,000 Somalis have been arrested over the past week and are being held in Kasarani stadium. The stadium is deemed a no-go zone for humanitarian organizations including the UNHCR. Comment: Somali militants have carried out attacks in Kenya since 2011. Police claim that Eastleigh has become a safe haven for Al-Shabaab, citing three recent grenade attacks in the area. According to UNHCR, asylum-seekers and refugees are to be protected against arbitrary arrest and detention, including the right to have the reasons for their detention reviewed by a court of law in a timely manner.
