KERBY, JESSE R. Kirbys in VA were Quakers of English extraction. The following info was located on Rootsweb and posted by a Mikel Sasser. There is sufficient evidence in the records of Virginia and the Carolinas to show that several Kirby/Cerby families followed the familiar migration pattern from the east coast of Virginia, southwest along the rivers to southern Virginia and, in some instances, on into North or South Carolina. In 1754, a Quaker Monthly Meeting was established on the south fork of the James River, now in the vicinity of Lynchburg, Virginia. The first members were old Stock Quakers of English extraction from the tidewater section of Virginia, including Hendricks, Kirbys, Neals, --. During the succeeding decade, Kirbys and other Quakers were dismissed for various reasons, including that of joining the Baptist church. Several Kirbys, including two named Jesse, were on a list of inhabitants of Henry Co., Virginia (N.C. border) who swore allegiance to Virginia during the early Revolutionary period. Four Kirbys are listed on the D.A.R. index of patriots for their services during the War: Jesse (1757-1852), Thomas (1742-1803), William (1736-1782), and Richard (1748-1811).
