KEY STAGE 2 IN SEPTEMBER Our pupil numbers continue to rise and as a result it has been necessary to employ a new member of staff temporarily in Key Stage 2. We’ve had a late number of transfer requests that have required us to act promptly. Miss S Hoar will join us in September for one term initially and will help reduce class sizes. Every morning, Miss Hoar will work with a class of Year 5 and Year 6 children as part of the normal setting routine – this will reduce class sizes to approximately 20 per class (an impressive size). There will now be three sets rather than two for Literacy and Numeracy. It will enable us to have a massive drive on literacy and numeracy to challenge our learners to achieve really well! In the afternoons, Miss Hoar will have a class of Year 3 and Year 4 children and will drive the new literacy and numeracy frameworks through exactly the same topic work all children in these year groups would normally experience (Space Topic in Autumn Term). Again, this will reduce class sizes to below 20 per class (impressive). This is an exciting opportunity in order to cater further for all groups of learners at Abercarn Primary and I am sure parents will be pleased with the reduction in class sizes and focus on literacy and numeracy skills. All Year 5 and Year 6 children will be set as normal on their return to school (Using Teacher Assessment and NFER / National Test Scores). The same type of information will be used to identify a Year 3 / Year 4 class of children in the afternoons. I have already spoken to parents of children this will affect. I understand this is a late change but due to pupil numbers this could not be avoided. I do believe it is a positive step forward to improve our school as well as further improve the achievement of all pupils. I am currently refurbishing a classroom to accommodate these extra classes in order for us to hit the ground running in September. If you have any questions, please contact me at school.
