KHUDI AOR MERD E MOMIN(Political Science for Muslim rulers)Faizan e Safar 2 Water is a huge life-providing theme in the Quran. God talks about how He creates life through water then sustains it by streams, the rains, rivers and oceans that are homes for so many creatures. And Allah has sent down rain from the sky and given life thereby to the earth after its lifelessness. Indeed in that is a sign for a people who listen. (Quran, 16:65) Man, enamored of his gross environment, remains sunk is ignorance and apathy, making no attempt to cast off the veil that has fallen upon.Humanity is the greatest barrier that separates man from Divinity. The animal soul is the greatest of all veils between God and man.Contemplation is this world resembles vision of God in the next world. Divine guidance involves self-mortification without which contemplation is unattainable. Fanah (lost in the remembrance of ALLAH SubHanuhu wa Taala), it’s explanation is the eradication of ignorance, to obtain knowledge and destroy desires and neglectfulness, to adopt constant remembrance of ALLAH SubHanuhu wa Taala. This quality now becomes to constant and that’s when the person is totally absorbed in ALLAH SubHanuhu wa Taala ‘s love as a result he becomes immortal by self destruction.Aashiqa hik wuzoo jo keetaa, Roz qiaamat taaeen hoo. Wich namaaz raku sajoode, Raihande sanjh sabaaheen hoo. Ethe othe doheen jahaaneen, Sabh faqar deeaan jaaeen hoo. Arshaan ton sai manzil agge, Paindaa kam tinhaaeen hoo. A lover purifies himself just once-with Kalma; His wuzoo will hold till the day of judgement. Day and night he prostrates himself And keeps his head bowed in supplication. The faqirs are at home in this world and the next, But a thousand stages beyond paradise Lies their real Home! Nigah-e-faqr main shaan-e-sikandari kya hai? Khiraaj ki jo gada ho, wo qaiseri kya hai? Falaq nay ki hai ata un ko khaajgi kay jinhain Khabar nahin rawish-e-banda parwari kya hai? Kissey nahin hai tamanna-e-sarwari lekin Khudi ki mout ho jis main, wo sarwari kya hai? Buton say tujh ko umeedain, Khuda say no meedi Mujhey bata tou sahi aur kaafri kya hai? (Meanings: Nigah-e-Faqr main shan-e-sikandari kya hai = What is the worth of kingdom in eyes of a saint?; Khiraj ki jo gada ho, wo qeseri kya hai = Such a rule in which ruler is always worried about keeping it secure, is worthless; Falaq = Nature; Khaajgi = Ruling class; Khabar nahin = Ignored; rawish-e-banda parwari = Sense of serving humanity; tamanna-e-sarwari = Desires to rule; Khudi ki mout ho jis main wo sarwari kya hai = Such rule is insulting to gain which, self respect is required to be sacrificed; Buton = Idols (referring to fellow human beings here); umeedain = Expectations; no meedi = Disappointment; Kaafri = Non Muslim who donot believe in Oneness of God) Knowledge without action is not knowledge. Knowledge is expansive while a person’s life span is short, therefore it is not compulsory to learn the many different branches of knowledge although it is necessary to learn that much as is required to make deeds and actions proper and correct. The highest pinnacle of knowledge is expressed in the fact that without it none can know God.Oh! Dear friends, seek knowledge, learn knowledge and practice on that knowledge. The Divine knowledge penetrates what is hidden and comprehends what is manifest. To worship successfully the position of manifestations and observations is reached. Knowledge and action cannot be divorced in any way, just as the light of the sun cannot be separated from the sun itself.Aashiq soee haqeeqee jehrhaa, Qatal maashooq de manne hoo. Ishq na chhorhe, mukh na morhe, Pae talvaaraan khanne hoo. Jit wal wekhe raaz maahee daa, Lagge ose banne hoo. Sachchaa ishq Hussain Ali daa, sir dae raaz na bhanne hoo. A real lover is one who bows his head Before the Beloved’s sword. He will never forsake his love, Never turn his back on the Beloved- Even if he were cut into pieces with the sword of love. He will put his heart and soul into his endeavor To find a clue to the Beloved’s secrets. The love of Hussain and Ali was true, O Bahu. They sacrificed their lives, But not their love for God and the Prophet. *. Aey Tair-e-Lahooti, uss rizq say mout achi Jis rizq say aati ho, parwaz main kotahi Aain-e-jawanmardi, haq goi-o-bay baaqi Allah kay sheron ko, aati nahin rubaahi (Meanings: Tair-e-Lahooti = Simile, addressing to Muslim youth; Rizq = food/income; Kotahi = Laziness, denotative and connotative referring to slavery here; Aain-e-Jawanmardi = Conditions to live with dignity; Haq goi = Honesty; Bay Baaqi = Bravery; Rubaahi = cunningness, hypocrisy) Poverty has a form and an essence. Its form is destitution and indigence, but its essence is fortune and free choice. A poor person is he who possesses nothing in the World nor does he wish to possess anything nor does he show sorrow at the loss of any Worldly possession. The glory of poverty is this, that the poor mans body is divinely preserved from base and sinful acts, and his heart from evil and contaminating thoughts. The deterioration of the entire nation is based on 3 things deteriorating – When the ruler is uneducated – When an Aalim does not practice upon his knowledge – and when the poor lose faith in ALLAH SubHanuhu wa Taala. The affliction of poverty is a sign of presence, while the delight of riches is a sign of absence. When you are reconciled to God in affliction, you see only the Author of affliction, and the affliction itself does not come.If you are not reconciled to God, when affliction comes, your heart is filled with anguish. Aashiq ho te ishq kamaawe, Dil rakkheen vaang pahaarhaan hoo. Sai sai badeeaan, lakh ulaahme, Jaaneen baagh bahaaraan hoo. Chaa soolee Mansoor dittaa, Jo waaqif kul asraaraan hoo. Sajdoin sir na chaaee-e Bahoo, Kaafir kaihan hazaaraan hoo. Become a lover, and let your heart be like a rock. If people hurl abuse at you, consider it as a blessing. Even Mansur, who knew all the secrets of God, Was sent to the gallows. Once you have bowed you head in prayer, Do not lift it again, O Bahu, Although the multitude may brand you an infidel.* *(The Muslim prayer, namaaz is offered in verying postures like standing, bowing, kneeling, in a given sequence, as directed by the prayer leader. But once a lover has bowed his head in prayer, he forgets his surroundings, even his own body. ‘The faithful’ brand him infidel because he does not join them in their set pattern of ritual prayer) *. Hai Fikr mujhey misra-e-saani ki zyada Allah karey tujh ko ata Fuqr ki talwaar Jo haath main ye talwaar bhi aa jayey tou Momin Ya Khalid-e-Janbaaz hai, Ya Haider-e-Karrar (Meanings: misra-e-saani = proceeding verse; Fuqr ki talwar = Strong Faith; Khalid-e-Janbaaz = Khalid Bin Waleed (May Allah be pleased with him); Haider-e-Karrar= Ali Ibn-e-Abu Talib (May Allah be pleased with him)) Dervishhood in all its meanings is a metaphorical poverty, and amidst all its subordinate aspects, there is a transcendent principle. To stay away from unmindful wealthy, the lazy needy and the ignorant dervishes is regarded as worship and prayer. The food of the dervish is ecstasy, his clothing is piety, and his dwelling place is the Unseen. Covetousness renders the dervish ignominious in both worlds.Ishq jinhaan de haddeen rachiaa, Raihan oh chup chupaate hoo. Loon loon de wich lakkh zabaanaan, Kaan oh gungee baate hoo. Karde wuzoo Ism Aazam daa, Dariaa wahadat nahaate hoo. Tadon qabool namaazaan Baahoo, Jad yaaraan yaar pachhaate hoo. Devotees, whose hearts are saturated With the love of God, keep their lips sealed. Every pore of their bodies has a million tongues With which to repeat the Name of God- Their silence speaks for their eloquence. They have done their wuzoo with the holy Name; They have bathed themselves in the ocean of oneness. Only when your soul identifies with its divine Source Will your prayer be accepted, O Bahu. *. Wo kal kay gham-o-aish per kuch Haq nahin rakhta Jo aaj khud afroz-o-jigar soz nahin hai Wo qaum nahin laiq-e-hangama-e-farda Jis qaum ki taqdeer main imroz nahin hai (Meanings: gham-o-aish = thick n thin; khud afroz-o-jigar soz = A person with motivation and determination; Laiq-e-hangama-e-farda = worthy to survive anymore; imroz = Present) This world is the abode of trouble, the pavilion of affliction, the den of sorrow, the house of parting, and the cradle of tribulation. The saints of God attain to a place where place no longer exists, where all degrees and stations disappear and where outward expressions fall off from the underlying realities. Our religion takes the middle course between free will and predestination. The saviour of a person is his adherence to religion and his destruction is in his objections to it. Whoever bows his head with humility, like a servant, God will exalt his state in both worlds.Acceptance are of 2 types – firstly the acceptance of the servant by the supreme master (ALLAH SubHanuhu wa Taala) and secondly the acceptance of the master by the servant ie. His every action and every decision is either followed or pleasurable in its prohibition. That person sees the “Hand” of ALLAH SubHanuhu wa Taala in every bounty and he regards sorrow and happiness, life and death as the bounties of ALLAH SubHanuhu wa Taala.Contemplation is this world resembles vision of God in the next world. Ishq muazzin dittiaan baangaan, Kanneen sad peeose hoo. Khoon jigar daa kadh karaahaan, Wuzoo paakh sezeeose hoo. Sun taqbeer fanai walee, Murhan muhaal theeose hoo. Parh takbeer theeose waasil, Taaheen shukr keetose hoo. When love gave the call to prayer, My heart responded: I purified myself-I performed my wuzoo* With the blood of my heart! When the cry “God is great” inspired me To merge in that great Lord, I found my heart unwilling to turn back. When I myself proclaimed Allah’s greatness, I merged in him and thanked him For relieving me of my long suffering. *(Wuzoo refers to the Muslim practice of cleaning oneself by washing on’es face, hands and feet with water before namaaz, the ritual prayer) *. Paani paani ker gaye Qalander ki ye baat Tu jhuka jab ghair key aagey, na tann tera na mann Apney mann main dub kay pa ja suragh-e-zindagi Tu agar mera nahi banta, na ban, apna tou bann (Meanings: paani paani ho gaya = ashamed of oneself; Qalander = Saint; Ghair = Stranger (British here); tann and mann = Body and Soul; suragh-e-zindagi = Connotatively referring to secrets to live prestigious life) Acquiescence is a characteristic of Gods friends, while hypocrisy is a characteristic of His enemies. The corruption of the divines consists in covetousness, that of the princes in injustice, and that of the dervishes in hypocrisy. Any one, who pretends to know God without lowliness and fear, is an ignorant fool, not a gnostic. Learning is not learning unless it is practiced, and gnosis is not unless it has reality.Audition should not be practiced until it comes of its own accord; one should not make a habit of it but should practice it seldom. Kalme dee kal tadaan paee, Jad murshid kalmaa dassiaa hoo. Saaree umar kufr wich jaalee, Bin murshid de dassiaan hoo. Shah Alee Sher-Allaah waangan, Vaddh kufr noon suttiaa hoo. Dil saafee taan hove je kar, Kalmaa loon loon rasiaa hoo. Only when my Master initiated me into the Kalma Did I truly understand its meaning. Only then did it dawn on me. That I had wasted my earlier life as a non-believer. But now, in the manner of Hazrat Ali, the lion of God, Kalma has slain the demon of my non-belief. Only when the Kalma has saturated every pore of your being Will your heart be purified, O Bahu. *. Ho terey bayaban ki hawa tujh ko gawara Iss dasht say behter hai na Dilli na Bukhara Jis simt main chahey, sift-e-sal-e-rawan chal Wadi ye hamari hai, wo sehra bhi hamara Ghairat hai bari cheez jahan-e-tag-o-dou main Pehnati hai derwaish ko taj-e-sir-e-dara Afraad kay haathon main hai akwaam ki taqdeer Her fard hai millat kau muqaddar ka sitara Deen haath say dey ker agar azad ho millat Hai aisi tijarat main Musalaman ka khasara (Dr. Iqbal is addressing British here) (Meanings: Bayaban = referring to Britain here; gawara = acceptable; dasht = Desert denotatively (India connotatively); Simt = Direction; sift-e-sal-e-rawan = Continuous flow; Wadi = Valley; Sehra = Desert; Ghairat = Self Respect; Jahan-e-tag-o-dou = World of struggle; Derwesh = begger here; Taj-e-sir-e-dara= Royal crown; Afraad = People; Akwaam = Nations; Fard = Individual; Millat = Nation; Muqaddar = destiny; Deen = Islam; Tijarat = Deal/Trade agreement; Khasara = Loss) God had saints whom He has distinguished by His friendship.God has caused the prophetic evidence to remain down to the present day and has made the saints the means whereby it is manifested. God had made the saints the Governors of the universe. To covet this world is to turn away from God for the sake of that which is transitory, and to covet the next world is to turn away from God for the sake of that which is everlasting. That which is transitory perishes and its renunciation becomes naught, but that which is everlasting cannot perish, hence its renunciation is also imperishable. A miracle is a token of saints veracity, and it cannot be manifested to an imposter except as a sign that his pretensions are false. The pre-eminence of the prophets depends on their exalted rank and not their being preserved from the defilement of sin, not on miracles or acts which violate custom. The miracles of a saint confirm the evidence of the prophet. Mujizat involve publicity; karamat secrecy. The saints are witnesses to the truth of the prophets mission. Miracles and saintship are Divine gifts, not things acquired by man. The ascension of prophets takes place outwardly and in the body, whereas that of the saints takes place inwardly and in the spirit. Saintship is a divine mystery which is revealed only through conduct.A saint is known only to a Saint. Gia eemaan ishqe de paaron, Ho ke kaafir rahee-e hoo. Ghat zunaaur kufar daa gal wich, Buttkhaane wich bahee-e hoo. Jis jaa jaanee nazar na aave, Sajdaa mool na daee-e hoo. Jaan kar jaanee nazar na aave, Kalmaa mool na kahee-e hoo. -When love of God enters you heart, Religion will fall by the wayside And you will be left in infidel. You should then wear The sacred thread of idol worshipers And live in the idol house [of your heart]. For futile is prostration Where the Beloved is not manifest; Pointless the repetition of the Kalma Where the Beloved is not seen face to face. *. Kabhi aey, Naujawan Muslim! taddabur bhi kiya tu ney? Wo kya gardon tha tu jis ka hai ik toota hua tara Tujhey uss qaum nay pala hai aaghosh-e-mohabbat main Kuchal dala tha jis nay paon main taaj-e-sir-e-dara (Meanings: Taddabur = To think; Gardon = Sky (Simile, group of Prophet (PBUH) and his companions here); Qaum = Nation (Muslims here); Aaghosh-e-Mohabbat = Caring protection; Kuchal = Trample; Taj-e-sir-e-dara = Royal crown) A man is united to God when God holds him in honor, and separated from God when God holds him in contempt. The way to God is like the blazing sun. God preserves His saints in all circumstances from the guiles of the Satan. Knowledge of God requires abandonment of forethought, and abandonment of forethought is resignation. The heart is the seat of the knowledge of God and is more venerable than the Kaaba. Men are ever looking to the Kaaba, but God is ever looking to the heart. The true object of pilgrimage is not to visit the Kaaba, but to obtain contemplation of God. Nafal namaazaan kamm zanaanaa, Roze sarfaa rotee hoo. Makke de val soee jaande, Gharon jinhaan tarotee hoo. Uchcheeaan baangaan soee devan, Neeat jinhaan dee khotee hoo. Keeh parvaah tinhaan noon, jinhaan Ghar wich laddhee bauhtee hoo. -Formal prayer and prostration are feeble pursuits. Fasting has little merit, other than to save food. Only they go on pilgrimage to Mecca Who are not wanted at home. Only they pray loudly, professing their devotion, Who are deceptive of intent. But those who have found God’s Name in their hearts Care not to fast nor prostrate themselves in formal prayer. *. Hawa-e-byaban say hoti hai kaari Jawanmard ki zarbat-e-ghaaziyanan Paltna, jhapatna, jhapat kay palatna Lahu garm rakhney ka hai ik bahana Parindon ki duniya ka derwesh hon main Kay shaheen banata nahin aashiyana (Meanings: Hawa-e-byaban = Deserts (referring to challenging tasks here); Kaari = Influential; Jawanmard = Brave man; Zarbat-e-Ghaziana = Daring strike; Lahu = Blood; Bahana = Excuse; Derwesh = Saint; Shaheen = Falcon (Muslim youth here); Aashiyana = Permanent residence) Love is an attribute of the beloved; therefore no explanation of its real nature is possible. The friends of God behold in every gift and benefit the Giver and the Benefactor.Do not trouble yourself with destiny, for what is destined from eternity will not be changed by your efforts. The perfection of the state of the intoxicated man is sobriety. Whoever is annihilated from his own will subsists in the will of God.God has eternal attributes, which are peculiar to Him, and subsist through Him. When the Divine omnipotence manifests its dominion over humanity, it transports a man out of his own being, so that his speech becomes the speech of God.God created the body and committed its life to the spirit, and he created the soul and committed its life to Himself. Unification is a mystery revealed by God to His servants, and it cannot be expressed in words. Love is a Divine gift; not anything that can be acquired. Faith and gnosis are love, and obedience is a sign of love.Na oh Hindu na oh momin, Na sajdaa den maseetee hoo. Dam dam de wich wekhan Maulaa, Jinhaan qazaa na keetee hoo. Aahe daane bane divane, Zaat sahee vanj keetee hoo. Main qurbaan tinhaan ton Baahoo, Ishq baazee jin leetee hoo. Not Hindu’s no Muslims- Free of religious ties, lovers don’t pray in temples; But they never take a break from their devotions And are always in communion with the Lord within. Absorbed in the essence of the Lord, They feign ignorance to conceal their wisdom. I sacrifice myself to anyone, O Bahu, Who enters the arena of love and wins its game. *. Utha mat khana-e-shesha-e-farang kay ihsaan Sifaal-e-Hind say meena-o-jaam paida ker Hazar chasshmey teri sang-e-rah say phootey Khudi main doob kay zarb-e-kaleem paida ker (Meanings: Khana-e-sheesha-e-farang = Referring to British here; Sifaal-e-Hind = Referring to former united India (sub contient) here; Meena-o-jaam = Referring to necessities of life here; Chasshmey = Denotatively means fountains but connotative meanings here, referring to obstacles; Sang-e-rah = Track/path; Phootey = Emergence; Zarb-e-Kaleem = Powerful Strike) When a man is satisfied with Gods decrees, it is a sign that God is satisfied with him.Seeking is the cause of finding, but finding is the cause of seeking. Mortification stands in the same relation to contemplation as Divine blessing to obedience. There can be no contemplation without mortification. When you have obtained knowledge of the lower soul, you recognize that it can be controlled by discipline, but that its essence and substance do not perish. The purpose of mortifying the lower soul is to destroy its attributes, not to annihilate its reality. When a person resigns himself to God, God protects him, and through Gods protection he comes nearer to annihilating the evil than he does through self-mortification. If any desires based on you own desires enters any work then the blessings are taken away from it.He who is most sincere in self-mortification is most firmly grounded in contemplation, for inward contemplation is connected with outward mortification. Yaar yagaanaa milsee taan je, Sir dee baazee laaen hoo. Ishq Allaah wich ho mastaanaa, Hoo hoo sadaa alaaen hoo. Naal tasawwur Ism Allaah de, Dam noon qaid lagaaen hoo. Zaate naal je zaat rale, Tad Baahoo naam sahaaen hoo. You will only meet the unrivaled Beloved If you offer your head on the altar of his love. Then, in an ecstasy of love, You will repeat the Name of Hu constantly, Devoting every breath of your life In contemplation of him. Only when your soul merges in the essence of the Lord Will you deserve the name ‘Bahu’. *. Nahin tera nash-e-mann kasr-e-sultani kay gumband per Tu Shaheen hai basera ker paharon ki chatanon per (Meanings: nash-e-mann = home; kasr-e-sultani = denotatively, it stands for royal palace but here, it means ease and laziness; Basera = Shelter; Chatanon = Rocks) Hunger sharpens the intelligence and improves the mind and health. Although hunger is an affliction to the body, it illumines the heart, purifies the soul, and leads the spirit into the presence of God. When food is withheld from the lower soul, it grows weak, the reason gains strength, and the mysteries and evidences of God become more visible. The fruit of hunger is contemplation of God. Water flows in the river bed, but when it reaches the ocean it ceases to flow and changes its taste, so that those who desire water avoid it, but those who desire pearls dive into it.Abu al-Hasan Ali al-Hajweri Radi ALLAHu Taala Anho Na main aalim, na main faazil, Na muftee na qazee hoo. Aghyaar kay ufkaar-o-takhayyul ki gadai Kya tujh ko nahin apni khudi tak bhi rasai?
